Blaze Bayley (born Bayley Alexander Cooke; 29 May 1963) is an English singer, musician, songwriter, and lyricist. He was the lead singer of Wolfsbane from 1984 to 1994, and currently from 2010 following reunions in 2007 and 2009. Bayley was also the lead singer for Iron Maiden from 1994 to 1999. Since then, he has embarked on a solo career.
Many people outside of the music industry know who Blaze Bayley is. During the early nineties, there was a period of a few years where bands were changing lead singers. Anthrax, Judas Priest, Motley Crue, and Iron Maiden. Replacing a frontman like Bruce Dickinson is no easy task for anybody. Look at how famous Iron Maiden still is to this day. You still have to give the guy credit for beating out other potential vocalists. It is no easy feat to do. Just ask the other vocalists who tried out and did not get the gig. He made two albums with Iron Maiden 1995’s The X-factor and 1998’s Virtual XI. Along the way, he gained the respect of his predecessor Bruce Dickinson on this latest Iron Maiden tour the band has been doing two songs from his era. The two records have stood the test of time they are more liked and appreciated more now than 20 years ago.
You will always have the fans that would feel like he should not have gotten the gig but to impress a legendary bassist like Steve Harris & to get the job is an excellent validation that he was the right replacement for the band and belonged in Iron Maiden during the time that he was there. 20 years later after making his last studio album with Iron Maiden Blaze continues to record and tour.
A quick chat with Blaze Bayley via Skype. We talk about the tour and his plans. Blaze is not about to retire anytime soon. His strategy is to sit on his laurels. He’s going to tour, record & bring the music to the fans and continue to prove that he is one of the great vocalists. He deserves the recognition.
Blaze is one of the few artists that won’t charge his fans a penny to meet him, take a picture, get an autograph. To survive in the music industry, you got to have genuine talent. If Blaze weren’t talented, he would not have gotten the gig with Maiden in the first place.
Blaze has released his new album “INFINITE ENTANGLEMENT PT. III” and now gigs in support.
Angel Alamo: How’s the tour so far?
Blaze Bayley: Fantastic. It has been a grand tour. A lot of the shows have been sold out. People are enjoying the new songs. It’s coming together. It’s part three of the trilogy.
AA: Are there any plans for a U.S. tour?
BB: Yes, we are coming in April 2019. I’m looking forward to coming to America.
AA: Was the record label ever hesitant to release the album?
BB: Well actually I am the record label. It is a mindset where I am free to do what I want to.
AA: How did you come up with the idea for the album to become a trilogy?
BB: I started writing a science fiction story to see if it would work for an album. It became clear that the story would be over three albums. In the story he is human, he doesn’t know if or not but he thinks like a human. He doesn’t feel human, so he goes on his journey to the other side. He still tries to figure out why is he there. And the third part of the trilogy he arrives to take part.
AA: Can you tell us more about your book?
BB: I’m currently working on it & should be coming out in 2019 towards the end of the touring cycle.
AA: How do you manage to keep your voice in such great shape?
BB: I don’t take drugs or drink any alcohol before a show, take lots of vitamins. Don’t talk before a show and I do not smoke.
AA: What is the best part about touring?
BB: I love to sing so singing my songs it’s incredible, fantastic feeling!
AA: What do you consider to be the worst part about touring?
BB: The lack of sleep, the hours of traveling if they ever do teleportation I’m going to sign up for it.
AA: What’s going on with the DVD?
BB: I recorded the two shows May 25th, and 26th. The DVD will be a two disk set. We are going to put in as much as we can on there with the concerts and footage.
